Boys Basketball

Garrett Bohannon Marvin Ridge boys’ basketball player scored 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range in the Mavs’ 82-49 victory over Parkwood on Dec. 15. Bohannon is averaging 9.4 points a game. Marvin Ridge is 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Carolina Conference as of 12-20.



Harrison Brown Marvin Ridge boys’ basketball player scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Mavs’ 82-49 victory over Parkwood on Dec. 15. Marvin Ridge is 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Carolina Conference.

Sanaah McGee Parkwood High boys’ basketball player is averaging 15.1 points, 3.2 assists and three rebounds a game for the Rebels this season.

Dorian Shinhoster The 6-foot-3 Sun Valley High boys’ basketball player is nearly averaging a double-double as the junior is averaging 10. 1 rebounds and 9.6 points a game for the Spartans.

Girls Basketball

Erin Addison Weddington High girls’ basketball player recently scored her 1,000th career point. Addison scored 25 points in Weddington’s 60-50 victory against Charlotte Catholic last week after the senior hit 4-of-9 3-point attempts. Addison is averaging 18 points and five rebounds a game.

Maddie Dillinger Cuthbertson High girls’ basketball player scored 15 points and had five rebounds in the Cavaliers’ 56-4 victory over Indian Land (S.C.) on Dec. 18. The freshman is averaging 11.3 points and 6.2 rebounds a game.

Addison Laney Parkwood High girls’ basketball player scored 15 points in the Rebels 66-37 victory against Forest Hills on Monday. The junior scored 14 points in the Rebels’ 58-51 victory against Marvin Ridge last week. She is averaging 10 points a game.

Molly Setliff Parkwood High girls’ basketball player scored 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting in the Rebels’ 66-37 victory against Forest Hills on Monday, Dec. 18. The senior scored 13 points in the Rebels’ 58-51 victory against Marvin Ridge last week. Setliff is averaging 15.3 points and five rebounds a game through 10 games.

Parkwood High The Rebels’ girls basketball team is 10-0 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Carolina Conference heading into a nonconference game Friday, Dec. 22 against Union Academy. Parkwood has defeated Marvin Ridge, Weddington and Charlotte Catholic in SCC play. Parkwood is averaging 63.8 points a game.

Track

Maiya Hayes Cuthbertson High sophomore had a jump of 31-5 in the triple jump at the Weddington Invitational to qualify for the state meet in triple jump.

Wrestling

Aidan Nolan, Tyrie Houghton and Bryan Zeledon Weddington High wrestlers all won first-place in their respective weight classes at the Porter Ridge Invitational on Dec. 16. Jake Wallace and Joe Zovtoski placed second in their respective weight classes while and Denton DiCarlo and Alec Orrell placed third.

Paul Nielsen
Nielsen was a sports writer for what is now the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for nearly 32 years before moving to North Carolina in February 2016. At the Democrat-Gazette, Nielsen's primary responsibility was beat coverage for Rogers High School. Rogers is a Class 7A school located in Northwest Arkansas.
Nielsen, a University of Arkansas graduate, covered the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Minor League Baseball team from 2008-2015. The Naturals are the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Nielsen has experience covering University of Arkansas athletics, including NCAA Tournament basketball games and several football bowl games. He also covered amateur and professional golf tournaments in Northwest Arkansas.
