Football

Max Brimigion Weddington High junior had seven catches for 184 yards and one touchdown in the Warriors’ 34-0 win against Monroe. He also had an interception and blocked a field goal attempt in the game.



Caleb Deveaux Marvin Ridge High running back rushed 16 times for 99 yards and one touchdown in the Mavericks’ win against Sun Valley.

Sam Howell Sun Valley High quarterback was 17-of-27 passing for 254 yards and he rushed for over 100 yards in the Spartans loss to Marvin Ridge.

Whitner Litton Weddington High quarterback was 13-of-20 passing for 269 yards and two touchdowns in the Warriors’ win against Monroe.

Bryce McLain Marvin Ridge High quarterback rushed for 74 yards, including 66 yards in the second half in the Mavericks’ win against Sun Valley. He was also 7-of-15 passing for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

Cross Country

Madeline Hill Cuthbertson High freshman won the Class 3A Midwest Regional Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Oct. 28 in a time of 18:23.85. Cuthbertson won the girls’ team championship.

Sarah LaTour Cuthbertson High senior finished second at the Class 3A Midwest Regional Cross Country Meet in a time of 18:32.03.

Tennis

Sarah Merrill Weddington High tennis player advanced to the finals of the Class 3A Women’s Individual Tennis State Championships where she lost to Rose Kenny Of Charlotte Catholic 7-6, 6-1 on Oct. 28.

Nele Steffens/Riya Vasa Weddington High doubles team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 3A Women’s Doubles State Championships where they lost 6-0, 6-1 to eventual state champions Savannah Bright/Stela Joksimovic of East Chapel Hill on Oct. 28.

Golf

Haley McCrossan Marvin Ridge golfer finished in 16th place at the Class 3A Women’s State Golf Championship after she fired an 85-83 168.

Paul Nielsen
Nielsen was a sports writer for what is now the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for nearly 32 years before moving to North Carolina in February 2016. At the Democrat-Gazette, Nielsen's primary responsibility was beat coverage for Rogers High School. Rogers is a Class 7A school located in Northwest Arkansas.
Nielsen, a University of Arkansas graduate, covered the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Minor League Baseball team from 2008-2015. The Naturals are the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Nielsen has experience covering University of Arkansas athletics, including NCAA Tournament basketball games and several football bowl games. He also covered amateur and professional golf tournaments in Northwest Arkansas.
