Football

Sean Brown Marvin Ridge receiver had six catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns in the Mavs’ 31-19 win against Parkland.



Caleb Deveaux Marvin Ridge senior rushed 10 times for 77 yards and one touchdown.

Sam Howell Sun Valley quarterback passed for 347 yards and he rushed for 200 yards as Sun Valley defeated Porter Ridge 42-41 in overtime.

Carter Kendall Cuthbertson senior had 10 tackles and four sacks that totaled 28 yards in losses in the Cavaliers’ loss to Kings Mountian.

Whitner Litton Weddington High quarterback passed for 251 yards as the Warriors defeated East Mecklenburg 30-14.

Bryce McLain Marvin Ridge quarterback rushed 13 times for 102 yards and one touchdown and he was 10-of-21 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the win against Parkland.

Devin Powell Marvin Ridge tight end had three catches for 56 yards in the Mavs’ win against Parkland.

Myles Wallace Cuthbertson running back rushed for 96 yards on 18 carries in the Cavaliers’ 27-17 loss to Kings Mountian.

Cross Country

Sarah Bechtel Weddington girls cross country runner finished in eighth place in the Championship Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival in Kernersville, N.C. on Sept. 8 in a time of 18:49.95. The Weddington girls finished in second place in the team standings.

Kaitlyn Cole Marvin Ridge sophomore won the girls’ race in the Invitational Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival in a time of 19:56.68. Marvin Ridge won the girls’ team title in the Invitational Division.

Kyle Durham Weddington boys cross country runner finished in 10th place in the Championship Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival in a time of 16:12.16. The WHS boys finished in second place in the team standings.

Madeline Hill Cuthbertson girls cross country runner finished in third place in the Championship Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival in a time of 18:37.77. Cuthbertson won the girls’ team title with 91 points.

Sarah LaTour Cuthbertson girls cross country runner won the Championship Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival with a time of 18:16.53. Cuthbertson won the girls’ team title with 91 points.

Luke Wolaver Marvin Ridge senior won the boys’ race in the Invitational Division at the Friday Night Lights X/C Festival in a time of 16:22.27. The Mavericks won the boys’ Invitational Division team title.

Paul Nielsen
Nielsen was a sports writer for what is now the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for nearly 32 years before moving to North Carolina in February 2016. At the Democrat-Gazette, Nielsen's primary responsibility was beat coverage for Rogers High School. Rogers is a Class 7A school located in Northwest Arkansas.
Nielsen, a University of Arkansas graduate, covered the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Minor League Baseball team from 2008-2015. The Naturals are the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
Nielsen has experience covering University of Arkansas athletics, including NCAA Tournament basketball games and several football bowl games. He also covered amateur and professional golf tournaments in Northwest Arkansas.
