
The fall sports season is finally underway and Tri-W teams have been working hard all summer to start their seasons off strong. Here is a look at the coming weeks for our five area schools and their varsity teams.
Weddington
The football, volleyball and men’s soccer teams at Weddington have high expectations to live up to for this year after strong 2018 performances. The football program saw its way to a state championship with a 15-1 record. The soccer team ended their season at 11-7-3 and the volleyball team went 10-10. Both the football and men’s soccer teams will open their seasons against Ardrey Kell. The football team will play their first game Friday, August 23. Soccer will begin for the Warriors on Tuesday, August 20. Weddington Volleyball opens this week Against Carmel Christian.
Parkwood
Parkwood men’s soccer is coming off of the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-13-1 and a conference record of 3-10-1. They will open Monday, August 19 at Forest Hills. The football team ended their 2018 season with an overall record of 2-9 and a conference record of 1-6. Their first game will be Friday, August 23 at home against North Lincoln. Parkwood volleyball had a 2018 overall record of 10-10 and a conference record of 5-9. They will have their first match on Tuesday, August 20 against Arborbrook Christian Academy.
Marvin Ridge
The Mavericks ended their 2018 volleyball season with an incredible record of 44-2. They were undefeated in their conference and came home with the 3A state championship. Marvin Ridge has set a high bar for themselves as they begin the 2019 volleyball season against the River Bluff Gators on Saturday, August 17. The men’s soccer team earned a second place finish in the 2018 state tournament, falling short to Chapel Hill by just one goal. Their final record on the year was 21-4. The season opener for the Mavericks will be on Wednesday, August 21 against the Independence Patriots. The Marvin Ridge football team ended their season with an overall record of 6-6. They will begin their season Friday, August 16 against the Rock Hill Bearcats in Rock Hill at 5:30 p.m.
Sun Valley
Spartan football made a strong showing last year with an overall record of 10-3 and a conference record of 5-2. Their season opener will be at home against Charlotte Christian on Thursday, August 22. Sun Valley’s soccer team ended the 2018 season with a record 1-20-2. The first game of the season will be on Monday, August 19 at the Philip O. Berry Academy of Technology. The Spartan volleyball team had an impressive 2018 record of 15-7, going 8-6 in conference play. They will open against West Stanly at home on Wednesday, August 21.
Cuthbertson
The Cuthbertson soccer team earned a record of 9-10-3 last year. They went 7-7 in conference play. The Cavaliers will play their first match of the year on August 21 against Hickory Ridge. Cuthbertson’s football team ended their season with a record of 3-8 overall and a record of 3-4 in the conference. They will play at South Iredell on August 23 for their first game of the season. Cuthbertson volleyball hopes to return for another strong season after ending the 2018 season with a record of 15-7. The first match for the Cavaliers will be at home against South Meck on August 21.
