Spring sports are underway in the Tri-W area. As the weather begins to warm, and sports move outdoors, some of the best competition of the year is sure to be in store. Last year’s spring season saw Tri-W schools advance to heated playoff competition, with several bringing home championship trophies and others falling just short. With teams dialing in on this year’s game plans, and with a chance at a fresh start, Tri-W teams have an exciting season ahead of them. Here is what’s in store as the Spring season begins.

Baseball
Last year’s 3A baseball state championship featured the Marvin Ridge Mavericks against New Hanover for first place. The Mavericks fell twice to the Wildcats in a best of three series, losing game one 7-3, and the second, 4-0. The Weddington Warriors finished first in the Southern Carolina Conference, defeating Marvin Ridge 6-5 in the conference tournament. Marvin Ridge would go on to defeat the Warriors 8-0 in round two of the state playoffs. Non-conference baseball is set to begin on March 2. Teams will play roughly 24 regular season games leading up to playoffs in May.

Men’s Lacrosse
The Weddington Warriors dominated last year’s lacrosse scene, ending their season with an overall record of 16-1. Weddington earned its third consecutive lacrosse state title last year. The Warriors won the championship 16-5 against the Chapel Hill Tigers. The first games of the season for lacrosse will be March 2, with the Warriors facing the Dorman Cavaliers for game one.
Softball
The 2019 Southern Carolina Conference saw some of its most intense competition by way of Softball. Multiple Tri-W schools participated in the state tournament, and the most successful team was conference champion Marvin Ridge. Finishing at 20-5 overall, and 10-2 in the conference, the Mavericks advanced to the final four of the state tournament, where they fell in a three-game series against the Central Cabarrus Vikings. Marvin Ridge will play their first game of the 2020 season at Hickory Grove on March 2.
Women’s Soccer
Both Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson made strong attempts at a state championship appearance last year. The Mavericks and the Cavaliers were eliminated in divisional championship games, after earning three wins each earlier in the tournament. The Mavericks will play Charlotte Catholic for game one of the 2020 season. Cuthbertson will open the season March 6, against the Wando Warriors of Mt. Pleasant.
