The Weddington Warriors have bested rival Marvin Ridge in two out of three games to win the series in one of the most important Southern Carolina 3A Conference matchups of the year.
With series wins over all previous competitors, including the 10-4 Cuthbertson Cavaliers, and a walk-off homerun by senior third baseman #7 Steven Gonzalez in game one of the series, Marvin Ridge seemed poised to dominate again as Thursday’s series-deciding double header began.

Instead, the Marvin Ridge reign of terror was brought to a halt as the Mavericks struggled to keep up with pitching of senior #21 Anthony Casciola. In Casciola’s complete game performance the Mavericks only managed two hits and one earned run.
Eight strikeouts in game two of the night by senior #25 Cooper McKeehan met with a go-ahead triple by senior #8 Greyson Barger to secure the heated series that left fans wailing and gnashing their teeth and left umpires visibly shaken as each and every one of their calls came under the fiery and expletive-laden scrutiny of the deeply emotional fans.

Weddington seems to have secured its place as the top dog of the conference for now, but there is still serious competition ahead for the Warriors. They move to 9-5 on the season as they face off against Piedmont, the ever improving Cuthbertson Cavaliers and Lake Norman to finish off the regular season.

Marvin Ridge moves to 11-4 on the year and 8-4 in the conference as they prepare for upcoming conference series against the 6-9 Sun Valley Spartans and 1-14 Charlotte Catholic.
