Weddington men’s basketball is first in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference, after Friday’s decisive win over the Monroe Redhawks. The 83-58 victory over Monroe brings Weddington to 9-0 in conference play, and 14-5 overall. The Warriors lead second-place Charlotte Catholic by just one conference victory. The 8-1 Cougars suffered their only conference loss of the year at Weddington in December.

Friday night’s competition began to sway in Weddington’s favor early on, as the Warriors held Monroe to just seven points in each of the first two quarters, and more than doubled Monroe’s score by the end of the first half.

While Weddington’s scoring efforts were well spread out throughout the game, the stat columns favored the efforts of sophomore guard Chase Lowe, who led the team in most categories. Starting out slowly, with just one basket in the first, Lowe eventually took scoring into his own hands, shooting 80% from the floor for 20 points on the night. Lowe led the team in the paint as well, with nine total rebounds. When he wasn’t scoring, Lowe was busy setting up his teammates, earning seven assists against the Redhawks. Lowe was responsible for two blocks and shot for 100% from the free-throw line.

Following closely in the scoring column were guards Owen Van Gundy and Kyle Frazier, scoring 17 each for the Warriors. Van Gundy led the team defensively throughout the game, earning four steals and two blocks. Frazier, who shot for 78% on the night, earned eight rebounds, two assists, and one steal.

Friday’s win over the Redhawks marks the second time this year that Weddington has defeated Monroe. The Warriors faced the Redhawks in early December for their second conference game of the year, resulting in a 49-33 victory. Weddington will continue conference play on Tuesday against the 13-7 Sun Valley Spartans. The Spartans have won eight of their last 10 games, and come into the matchup at 6-3 in conference play. The Warriors will travel to Charlotte Catholic on Friday for a matchup that will likely determine final conference positions for both teams.
