The Weddington Warriors may be well on their way to a perfect regular season after defeating Marvin Ridge 52-7, in what was touted to be the Warriors’ toughest conference contest of the year. Both teams entered the competition with 4-0 conference records, but Weddington’s advantage was apparent early on.

Weddington currently holds an overall record of 9-0, making this their best season start in school history. They have already scored 50 more points on the season than they had at this time last year. The Warriors have had a powerful presence in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference for a long time, but their dominance this season is unprecedented. Even in their 15-1 championship winning run last year, the Warriors fell to Charlotte Catholic in week six. Charlotte Catholic has bested the Warriors in each meeting since 2016. This year, in week six, Weddington defeated Catholic 45-0.

When Weddington kicked off to Marvin Ridge on Friday night, the competition seemed fierce. The Mavericks ate up more than eight minutes on their opening drive, ending with a quarterback keep up for a touchdown. The Warriors, not used to being down on the scoreboard, scored immediately with an 80-yard run by Will Shipley. Weddington senior Malik Mustapha blocked a Marvin Ridge punt on the Mavericks’ next drive, and Weddington began their charge.

A field goal, and several Shipley touchdowns later, the Warriors were well out of reach. By halftime, Weddington was up 31-7. With the wind gone from their sails, the Mavericks would not score again on the night. Weddington’s back up squad took the field for most of the second half and continued the onslaught, adding three more touchdowns for a final score of 52-7.

The Warriors will face their final two conference opponents in the coming weeks. They will face off against the 6-3 Monroe Redhawks on November 1. The Warriors will play at home against the 5-4 Cuthbertson Cavaliers for their final game of the regular season on November 8.
